Heiska & Tervamäki

An encounter of two modes of expression, a profound interaction, the artistic collaboration of visual artist Hannaleena Heiska and dancer-choreographer Minna Tervamäki began in 2015. It has since been formed and transformed into a series of multi-disciplinary performances and a video work titled Metamorphosis (2023). In the performative presence of the ever-morphing collaboration are combined painting and dance, colours and bodily movements, a unique conversation of two auteurs.

 

The unspoken communication between Heiska and Tervamäki is constantly deepened by the processual nature of their work. The longevity of the collaboration has resulted in an artistic language of its own, outside of the constraints of any one medium – dance or painting. The openness of the process invites audiences to forsake familiar conventions of viewing and become part of the moment, accepting a new way of interacting in a shared space and time.

 

Heiska and Tervamäki debuted their collaboration in EMMA Espoo Museum of Modern Art in 2016. Their collaborative work has since been seen at Art Fair Suomi 2017; the Finnland-Institut in Deutschland, Berlin, 2018; Beaconsfield Gallery Vauxhall, London, 2018; the Cable Factory, Helsinki, 2018; and at the Ateneum Art Museum, Helsinki, 2022.

 

A logical continuation to their co-practice, Metamorphosis, an interdisciplinary exhibition featuring film, performance and installation, will be seen at EMMA Espoo Museum of Modern Art from April to September, 2023.
